Q. What is No-Scalpel Vasectomy? How does it differ from conventional vasectomy?
A. No-Scalpel Vasectomy (NSV) was developed in China in the mid-1970's. It differs from conventional vasectomy in how anesthesia is given, and it is a more consistent, less traumatic surgical approach to the vas deferens. NSV has been shown in numerous international studies to be a safer, less invasive surgical procedure. How much safer? Compared to conventional vasectomy techniques, NSV is documented to result in 10-times fewer complications, especially reduced bleeding and hematoma.
Q. Isn't No-Scalpel Vasectomy (NSV) just some kind of marketing gimmick?
A. No. True, "No-Scalpel" is something of a misnomer-- while no scalpel is used, it does require breaching the scrotal skin with a sharpened hemostat. The name "No-Scalpel" was chosen to help reduce men's fear of the knife.
Its name notwithstanding, NSV has strong benefits for both practitioner and patient. NSV is generally about 50% faster to perform, uses simpler instrumentation, results in 10-times fewer complications, requires no stitches, and involves a quicker recovery.
Perhaps the best testimonial to NSV's very real benefits is its rapid acceptance by physicians in the U.S. and internationally. By 1995, less than 10 years after its introduction into the U.S. by Dr. Marc Goldstein, almost 1/3 of all vasectomies were performed using NSV. In the U.S. and elsewhere, NSV is rapidly becoming the standard technique taught in urological residency and family planning programs.
Q. Why are Li Brand® NSV instruments better than competing instruments?
A. Advanced Meditech takes great pride in offering the finest quality NSV instruments. Often copied but never duplicated, Li Brand® (pronounced "Lee Brand") NSV instruments were rated the Best in an independent quality evaluation of all major manufacturers' instruments by Indeps, Inc. on behalf of US purchasers. It's no wonder so many top urologists and international organizations prefer Li Brand® NSV instruments.
Only Li Brand® NSV instruments have the original and unique trauma-reducing cantilevered design that thousands of leading physicians worldwide have come to know and trust. They are also the only instruments used and proven in EVERY major published study of NSV-- in China, Thailand, the U.S., and Spain.
Li Brand® NSV ringed forceps are reinforced for long life and are more circular to ensure proper stretching of the scrotal skin around the vas; both instruments are made using the finest Japanese stainless steel with a matte finish to reduce instrument glare.

Q. What kind of occlusion techniques are used with No-Scalpel Vasectomy?
A. No-Scalpel Vasectomy is not a method of occlusion. It is a better anesthesia technique and a less traumatic surgical approach to the vasa. Once the vasa are isolated and delivered through the wall of the scrotum, they are cut and occluded using the practitioner's preferred technique of cautery, surgical clips, ligation, fascial interposition, or some combination thereof.
